Based on our work experience, the diameter of the adhesive dot should be half the pitch between solder pads. After installation, the diameter of the adhesive dot should be 1.5 times its original size. This way, we can ensure there’s sufficient adhesive to bond the components while avoiding excessive adhesive seeping onto the solder pads.
Dispensing pressure (back pressure)
Excessive back pressure can easily lead to胶溢出 and excessive胶用量; if the pressure is too low, intermittent dispensing and missed dots may occur, resulting in defects. The pressure should be selected based on the same adhesive quality and working environment temperature. When the ambient temperature is high, the adhesive’s viscosity will decrease and its flowability will increase. In such cases, it’s necessary to reduce the back pressure to ensure a steady supply of adhesive—and vice versa.
Dispensing needle size
In fact, the inner diameter of the dispensing needle should be half the diameter of the dispensing point. During the dispensing process, the dispensing needle should be selected based on the size of the solder pads on the PCB: For example, since the sizes of 0805 and 1206 solder pads are not significantly different, the same needle can be used; however, for solder pads with large size differences, different needles should be chosen. This approach not only ensures the quality of the dispensing points but also improves production efficiency.
The distance between the dispensing needle and the printed circuit board
Different automated dispensing machines use different needles, and some needles have a certain degree of stop mechanism. Each time work begins, the distance between the needle and the PCB—also known as Z-axis height calibration—must be adjusted.
Glue temperature
Epoxy adhesives should generally be stored in a refrigerator at a temperature between 0 and 5°C. They should be removed from the refrigerator about 30 minutes in advance to allow the adhesive to reach the working temperature fully. The recommended working temperature for the adhesive is 23–25°C. Temperature has a significant impact on the viscosity of the adhesive. If the temperature is too low, the adhesive droplets will become very small and may exhibit stringing. Temperature fluctuations can also cause variations in the amount of adhesive dispensed. Therefore, it’s crucial to maintain a stable ambient temperature. At the same time, the humidity of the environment must also be carefully controlled. If the humidity is too low, the adhesive droplets tend to dry out quickly, which can compromise the bonding strength.
